Muscles

The muscular system is a group of organs (muscles) that work together to move bones, skin and muscles in this system:

  1. Gastrocnemius
  2. Biceps femoris
  3. Sartorius
  4. Triceps brachii
  5. Deltoid

Gastrocnemius

The gastrocnemius muscle is a muscle in the lower leg (calf). It is also known as the calf muscle. It is extremely useful for walking because it points the toes. It is used for doing anything that requires the feet. Other muscles useful for walking are the biceps and triceps femoris muscles.

Biceps femoris

Biceps femoris is a muscle in the upper leg. It is attached to the femur. It has two heads, which means that it starts as one, then splits into two different sections. Additionally, it is another muscle that is used for walking, running, jumping, and almost anything else that uses the legs. Lastly, it is one of the strongest muscles in the body.

Sartorius

The sartorius muscle is found in each leg. It is a long, thin muscle. In fact, it is the longest muscle in the body. It stretches from the outside of the hip to the inside of the knee. It is mostly used for crossing the legs, as when it tightens, it pivots the upper leg and pulls in the lower leg. The sartorius is an essential muscle for twisting the legs.

Triceps brachii

Triceps brachii is found in the back of each upper arm. It has three heads, which means that it starts as one and splits into three. It is important for lifting and lowering objects. It is paired with the biceps brachii. This means that when the triceps contracts, the biceps relaxes. It is the muscle that straightens the arm. It gets stronger from doing activities that require a good amount of force to straighten the arm, such as push ups.

Deltoid

The deltoid is the shoulder muscle. It is triangular shape, hence the name “deltoid,” referring to the Greek letter delta. It covers the front, back, and sides of each of the shoulders. It is responsible for moving the shoulder, allowing us to use our arms. It lifts the arm when it contracts, pulling it up.
